Censorship Update — Feb. 18, 2009

Wow: Jimmy Carter opposes the “Fairness Doctrine”. But, apparently, so does Barack Obama?

President Obama announced today that he opposes bringing back the “Fairness Doctrine”. However, he didn’t elaborate how he would oppose it, nor if and how he would oppose other FCC regulations or Congressional action that would have the same chilling effect on free speech and the free exercise of religion.

Meanwhile, one conservative says Bring It On!. These potential regulations are a double-edged sword for their supporters — liberal viewpoints will have to stand side-by-side with conservative ones. Also, all those liberal members of the MSM could also be subject to these proposed rules. Imagine the sweet revenge if your favorite radio talk show host demanded response time to the nightly broadcast news shows!

Oh, and “shockingly”, Michael Savage is preparing to file suit to prevent the enforcement of any censorship, while ACORN supports the return of the “Fairness Doctrine”. Because, clearly, “non-partisan” community “organizers” believe the content of talk radio is critical to delivering needed services to their clients.

And American Thinker thinks Bill Press is deluded.

While I’m on a roll, a couple great historical analyses from the Heritage Foundation here and here.

Whew!
